A Dedication to Helping Others
As a student at the Harvard School of Dental Medicine, Dr. Joseph DePalo was committed to volunteering to help his community—a dedication that helped earn him a 2015 DTA Foundation scholarship. Today, as a resident in pediatric dentistry at Nationwide Children’s Hospital/The Ohio State University, he remains committed to helping his community. Recently we caught up with him to find out how his life has changed since he received the scholarship.
What are your three biggest takeaways from dental school as you move forward with your career?
- View everything as a learning opportunity.
- Respect the people around you.
- Work hard and have fun along the way.
What advice would you give to students who are just enrolling in dental school?
Be open minded and make sure to take care of yourself during these four years.
How did getting the DTA Foundation scholarship help you in your final years in dental school?
Every penny counts when it comes to financing dental school. The DTA Foundation scholarship certainly made a difference in my ability to finance my predoctoral education and ultimately pursue post-graduate education.
Is there anything you’d like to say to the donors who make the DTA Foundation scholarships possible?
Thank you for providing me the resources to excel in dental school. I'm am humbled and inspired by your generosity.
Are you continuing with your volunteer activities post school?
I hope to continue making philanthropic contributions during residency and future clinical practice.
What should we know about you now and your plans for the next five years?
The next two years will be spent completing my residency in pediatric dentistry. Following my post-graduate training, I hope to balance a clinical practice with some sort of part-time role in dental education.
