Your Donations Making a Difference: Altarum

This text will be replaced with the slideshowA current Dental Trade Alliance Foundation grantee, Altarum, has helped nearly 33,000 kids in 30 states improve their oral health through their SmileConnect® program --thanks, in large part, to your donations to the Dental Trade Alliance Foundation.

“Support from DTA Foundation has allowed the SmileConnect community to move outside of Michigan, officially launching our nationwide expansion,” said Haley McDermott, Altarum’s Center for Implementation Science philanthropic outreach coordinator. “With DTAF’s support, the SmileConnect community has developed strong partnerships with dental and dental hygiene schools, oral health manufacturers, and philanthropic organizations- relationships critical to addressing each state’s unique oral health climate and needs. ... All of this was possible because of DTAF’s support, and we couldn’t be more grateful.”

SmileConnect works to transform children’s oral health by providing a unique online platform that connects educators and community organizations with the oral health resources their students need. At, educators and community organizations can post requests for oral health resources and preventive services on an interactive online website, which are then made public to dental providers, dental schools, and philanthropic donors who can identify opportunities they are able to support. It does that in four ways:

  • Clinical: A statewide clinical decision support tool that improves medical and dental coordination.
  • CME: In-person and remote training, assistance and certification to medical primary care providers.
  • Reporting: Statewide registry to allow better monitoring of pediatric oral health.
  • Communities: Integrated strategies to fulfill the need for education and services among children in their local communities.

“Through this innovative platform, we aim to not only engage educators and community organizations, but also to activate the dental health community, streamline philanthropic contributions, coordinate existing resources, and better identify areas in need to inform health programs and policy nationwide—all with the intention of reducing access related disparities, broadening the reach of oral health care awareness, and increasing access to care. We believe that a transformational change is needed in the fight against children’s tooth decay, and have confidence in the power of this social network solution to create a new pathway for change.”

Thanks to funding from a 2016 DTA Foundation grant, they were able to create promotional videos explaining how the SmileConnect® program works with more videoes in the works.

Since the launch of SmileConnect in 2017 they have already touched this many lives:
